Top 10 Nightlife in Silom

The Best Places to go at night in Silom

Nightlife in Silom is renowned throughout Bangkok for being lively, diverse and downright fun. Come nightfall, this area shows its true colours, with its numerous personas drawing in a wide range of visitors from all walks of life.

First and foremost, Silom is Bangkok’s original red-light district, with Patpong Road and Soi Thaniya both packed full of naughty go-go bars, mysterious karaoke dens and some rather suspicious looking massage houses. However, defining the overall nightlife scene in Silom is far more complex than this. The area around Soi 2 and 4 is the epicentre for Bangkok’s gay community, whilst there are several must-visit pubs, clubs, and some stunning rooftop bars scattered around. With our team of Bangkok experts, we’ve compiled the only Top 10 Nightlife in Silom list you’ll ever need.

    Maggie Choo’s

Maggie Choo’s on Silom Road captivates the imagination like few other bars in Bangkok. Located in the basement of the popular Novotel Bangkok Fenix Silom Hotel, this breathtaking 1930’s Cantonese-inspired space certainly isn’t your ordinary hotel drinking spot. The venue was created by Ashley Sutton, a renowned designer in Bangkok responsible for the similarly impressive ‘Iron Fairies’ and ‘Bookshop’ across town in Thong Lor.

Maggie Choo’s is easy on the eye from all angles; vintage touches like green lamps and plush sofas are impressive, whilst sexy models lounge about on the piano, above the bar itself, or rock back and forth on swings at the entrance. The venue used to be the former bank vault of the East India Company, and you can explore one of the private booths which are set inside the vaults, which still remain intact. Drinks go hand in hand with the stylish setting - for the best, try the ‘HMS Leviathan’ (honey, bourbon, vermouth and lemon). Read More...

    Sky Bar

The Sky Bar at the Lebua State Tower was a firm Bangkok nightlife favourite in well before the boys in The Hangover II got there in 2011. That said, the influence of the Hollywood blockbuster has clearly rubbed off on the Sky Bar, which is now usually gets packed-out every night with tourists eager to get a bird’s-eye-view of the city, as well as that all-important photo in front of Lebua’s iconic dome structure.

Despite the crowds, Lebua’s Sky Bar is still up there with some of the best rooftop bars in the world. Sitting pretty 63 storeys up, the views over Bangkok and the nearby Chao Phraya River are quite breathtaking. Alongside that stunning golden dome (which you’re sure to recognise from the movie), Sky Bar has a luxurious list of exotic cocktails, imported wines and beers. A real sophisticated Bangkok experience with not a flip flop in sight - the only problem is you can't sit down while you enjoy your cocktail.  Read More...

    Patpong Road

Patpong Road in Silom is famous for its nightly walking street-style market, but even more (in)famous for its numerous go-go bars. Here’s how they work:

You go inside (usually free unless you are offered a ‘show upstairs’), take a drink like any other normal bar then sit back and relax. There will be a central stage with a crowd of skimpily-dressed girls dancing – some enthusiastically, some not so much - to the pumping music. After their dance session, you’re more than likely going to be joined at your table by one (or more) of the friendly dancers, who will probably ask for a ‘lady drink' (about 200 baht and they get commission). Other things ‘to buy’ are subject to your choice of bar!

Other than go-go bars, the Patpong area does boast plenty of other better behaved venues, where you can find pool tables, cheap drinks, friendly service and food.  Read More...

The stunning Park Society Bar at Sofitel So Hotel joined Bangkok’s booming rooftop bar scene at the end of 2012 and has enjoyed growing success with its superb views over Lumpini Park, sumptuous menu of international cuisine and an altogether sophisticated vibe.

Park Society appeals firmly to Bangkok’s more affluent crowd (they even have a ‘Hi-So’ terrace above for an extra 500 baht), and the food and drinks prices further reinforce this fact (a small selection of tapas starts at 1,100 baht, wine by the glass at 300 baht). However, for a unique view of the lush greenery of Lumpini Park, as well as a stylish place to see, as well as be seen at, Park Society is a firm favourite of ours. Sofitel So Hotel also holds a popular pool party on their 10th floor every last Saturday of the month.  Read More...

    Cloud 47

Cloud 47, in our humble opinion, is one of the best rooftop bars in Bangkok. There are other lofty bars in the city that eclipse this spot in terms of height and sophistication, but Cloud 47’s unpretentious, laid back vibe make this a firm favourite in our books. Rather than being just a tourist hotspot, the bar welcomes a mix of locals as well as foreign visitors who all come for the incredible views and tasty food and bargain drinks deals.

The entrance to Cloud 47 is a little inconspicuous (you have to go through the lobby of the United Centre building on Silom Road). Find the elevator and head to the top floor, step outside, and then it hits you: an incredible 180 degree view of downtown Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River. The whole venue, unlike other cramped rooftop bars in town, is huge. The open terrace area provides plenty of space to walk around and they also have nightly live music, a live sports screen and a pool table.  Read More...

One of the few all-out night clubs in the Silom area, Tapas Room welcomes a fun and friendly crowd who come to shake their hips the Latin house inspired soundtrack. True to its name, Tapas Room serves up Spanish delights in its downstairs restaurant from 15:00, though the fun really starts to happen upstairs in their main room later on.

Located on Silom Soi 4, a small alleyway renowned for its lively gay scene, Tapas Room Nightclub draws in a surprising diverse crowd, both male and female, including long-time expats, tourists, a few locals and of course a good helping of Bangkok’s thriving gay community. Emphasis here is on dancing, smiling and having fun, along with an especially energetic percussion player who has to be seen to be believed.  Read More...

    DJ Station

    DJ Station

DJ Station is the epitcente of Bangkok’s gay community, and can be found on one of the capital’s pinkest streets, Silom Soi 2. This huge nightclub - almost bordering super-club status with its multiple floors, rooms and bars – draws in the masses late on the weekends when things get particularly hot, sweaty and crowded.

The club usually puts on a drag-show early on with men in dresses miming to classic ballads, whilst the dance floor fills as the night progresses with the relentless techno and house keeping the place pumping into the early hours. Look out for the human-sized bird cages and, whether you like it or not, you will probably get groped. DJ Station opens at 22:00 daily and I.D is a must for all.

    • Location: Silom Soi 2

The whole Patpong area is bursting full of naughty go-go bars, and Bada Bing on Soi 2 is probably the best of the bunch. So what makes it stand out from the rest? Firstly, their honest and transparent drinks prices (around 140 baht for a beer with no ‘extra’ charges) as well as free entry every night means that you can relax knowing that you’re not going to get ripped off. Another reason to come to Bada Bing Bar, of course, is the girls. Every night, around 25 or so lovely ladies take to the stage in various skimpy outfits, provocatively dancing to the pumping dance music.

Bada Bing Go-Go Bar is also one of the biggest of its type in the area, meaning that there are plenty of seating options around the stage area or at a more private area at the back. The place usually gets quite busy too (from around 22:00), so you won’t feel like you are the centre of attention (unlike some other empty bars in the area that seem to treat you like royalty in an attempt to empty your pockets of your very last baht.) Silom, in particularly Soi 2 and 4, is Bangkok’s answer to London’s Soho or New York’s Chelsea. Both small streets are packed-out with gay bars, clubs and the odd massage shop and male sauna. Although being Bangkok’s pinkest streets and attracting a mostly gay crowd, Soi 4 is beginning to draw in a more diverse clientele, from couples on a dates, to groups of tourists as well as the odd family! Soi 2 offers a slightly more intense atmosphere and is much smaller and narrower.

Another draw to these two streets is that many of the bars here boast some of the cheapest drinks you’ll find in this part of town, with happy hours running every night from 17:00-21:00 at many places. Noteworthy bar-hopping stops include Tapas Room Nightclub (Soi 4, not actually a gay club), The Balcony (Soi 4, Silom’s busiest gay bar) and DJ Station (Soi 2, a huge gay nightclub).  Read More...

    Soi Thaniya

    Soi Thaniya

To label Soi Thaniya as Bangkok’s ‘Little Tokyo’ might be doing the Japanese capital a little bit of an injustice. This Silom street is well-known for its collection of gentleman’s lounges, go-go bars and massage parlours targeting the Japanese market; a little similar to the adjacent Patpong Road, just with no night market, higher prices and all signs translated into Japanese. Most of the bars here require a short elevator journey up, creating an air of mystery as to what lies inside. However, come to Soi Thaniya after 20:00 and there’s an obvious giveaway about what these bars are all about. Dozens of girls, many not wearing too much, pour out into the road to entice in the customers.

Away from its seedy-side, Soi Thaniya does have a couple of excellent Japanese restaurants, Thai street food vendors and a couple of more laid back bars with only drinks for sale, rather than anything else.
